The handsome multi-color bird on a bocce ball stands approx. 9.5" tall (not including the plume) and is about 3" across the back. The bird itself measures 7.55" long from beak to tail, and 5.5" tall.
The vintage bird collection, designed by Jim Mullan, was inspired by his fascination with birds and antique objects. The crows were used as hunting decoys in the 30's and 40's and the smaller birds were carved in the 1950's. The original decoys were passed on to Jim in 1991 and turned into eclectic, one of a kind pieces of art. You can see a lively sense of humor in each creation. The original inventory of birds was depleted in 2009.
The birds are hand carved, faithfully referencing the originals, hand painted and finished with the addition of a variety of vintage pieces. The unusual relics such as croquet balls, binoculars and old toys give each inspiring bird his own personality. Objects once cast aside as useless are used to demonstrate the fragile balance between nature and industry.
